State boarding schools may be the best kept secret in the English education system. The education delivered is of the highest quality and the cost of tuition is covered entirely by the British government, meaning that total fees (covering boarding only) are considerably less than comparable private schools.
Situated on a leafy campus in Bishop’s Stortford, near Stansted Airport, Hockerill is a strong, caring community of 300 boarders and 500 day students. Hockerill has a focus on languages and music with both French/English and German/English bilingual sections. Hockerill prides itself on how International Baccalaureate (IB) principles inform teaching and learning across the College.
The main intake years are ages 11 and 16. The Lower College curriculum is based on the IB Middle Years programme offering a wide range of subjects. Students also sit GCSEs. For Sixth Form, students follow the IB Diploma Programme.
The College has a strong extra-curricular provision which includes Sports, Music Ensembles and Choirs, Debating anas Uganda, India, Japan, China, Spain France, Croatia, Belgium, Germany, and Italy
As well as featuring in the Sunday Times IB Schools Guide, Hockerill’s university destinations list compares favourably to that of all top independent schools with 75% of departing Year 13 students in 2022 who are attending UK universities going on to Russell Group institutions.
